{Music} Nine essential tips for working with people who are blind http://www.perkins.org/stories/blog/nine-essential-tips-for-working-with-people-who-are-blind August 31, 2015 By JIM DENHAM With more people who are visually impaired in today’s workforce, following these simple do’s and don'ts is smart business etiquette Documents with highly stylized typefaces can be difficult for people with low vision to read. Instead, use easy-to-read fonts like Helvetica or Arial. It’s not difficult to work with people who are blind. In fact, if you have coworkers who are visually impaired, or if your job takes you to companies with employees who are blind, following some simple guidelines will make your interactions more respectful and productive. While some of these suggestions may seem like basic common sense, others may not be so obvious. DO identify yourself when initiating a conversation. You shouldn’t assume the person will recognize your voice. Just as you identify yourself when conducting a

  • Wearable Technology is Redefining What It means To Be Disabled

    14/09/2015 Duração: 07min

{Music Intro} Wearable technology is redefining what it means to be disabled by  David Z. Morris @davidzmorris FEBRUARY 10, 2015, 9:05 AM EDT The meaning of “disabled” is changing as people adopt wearable devices and move into a bionic future. The visually impaired have used canes to navigate for most of recorded history, but the white version we’re familiar with was born in early 20th century Paris. Guilly d’Herbemont lived above a street frequented by blind pedestrians, regularly witnessing their peril in an era when automobiles were common but crosswalks a novelty. By 1931, she had come up with the idea of establishing a bold white cane as a protective symbol and navigational tool for the blind, and distributed more than 5,000 of them at her own expense. The idea had spread internationally within two years. Tech developer Krispian Lawrence hopes to build on d’Herbemont’s legacy. Lawrence lives in India, which he says has “the unfortunate distinction of being the blind capital of the world,”

{Music} {Short Video Caption} collaborative robots help researchers see a better future for the blind August 28, 2015 in baxter in the lab by Sue Sokoloski It’s been said that technology can create class divides, but M. Bernardine Dias, founder of the TechBridgeWorld research group at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, sees technology playing a more uniting role. Dias’ vision is evident in TechBridgeWorld’s latest research project, a program that explores how collaborative robots can help the blind navigate urban environments. In collaboration with the blind community in Pittsburgh, the researchers are exploring ways that the Baxter Research Robot can enable those with impaired vision to accomplish tasks that are easily taken for granted, such as distinguishing between two colors of bus tickets or understanding directions through physical gestures. Eventually, the researchers would like to create a mobile robot that helps blind people find Baxters located throughout the city. The goals o

Researchers there found that people who experienced simulated blindness were then more likely to perceive the blind as less capable of functioning independently. “Disability activists have long argued that simulations give a falsely negative view of disability,” the study's lead author, Arielle Silverman, told me. Silverman, a PhD candidate at CU-Boulder'

How One Student Came to Love Braille by Kaitlin Shelton This originally appeared in Future Reflections, Volume 34, number 1. Today I am an avid Braille reader. I love reading novels on my BrailleSense or in hard copy, and I can't imagine life without literacy. Some would say I'm even a bit too stern about Braille. I tend to avoid other forms of reading such as audiobooks and live readers, since a part of me considers using those methods of reading to be cheating. You really can't replace Braille and the independence that comes along with it. From the way I talk, you're probably assuming that I've had a Braille-filled childhood and parents who fought long and hard to secure the privileges of reading for me, but that wasn't the case.

Bringing 3D Printing into the Classroom by Kevin Yang This article originally appeared in Future Reflections, Volume 34, Number 1. My name is Kevin. I am seventeen, and my dad has been blind for sixteen years. As a child, I was always accompanied by my dad—running around the house playing hide and seek, banging random keys on the piano, and putting on puppet shows. I forced him to listen to my comedy stand-ups, which actually were just stand-ups, minus the comedy. I couldn't have asked for more. My dad has a PhD in material science and is working to create a full-page Braille display. In 2003 he developed a novel idea for creating cheaper and more efficient refreshable Braille cells. With the help of my mom, he created a very large sc

Throughout my life my friends and family have known me for many different talents and interests. Today I am best known by the moniker Judo Girl, a designation that makes me happy and proud. Judo is a Japanese sport that consists of throws, pens, and submissions. It is sometimes confused with karate or tae kwon do because of the similar uniforms we wear. Next to soccer, judo is the second most widely played sport in the world. Every day judo touches the lives of millions of people, and it has transformed my life for the better. Judo is one of the few sports that is played in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The only specific difference between

(music) Cheering Blind by Deja Powell This is the first part of an article that appeared originally in Future Reflections, Volume 34, number 2. Recently I received an email from a young woman who has ambitions of trying out for her high school's cheerleading squad. She wanted to know if it was possible for someone like her, who is blind, to be a cheerleader. Her desire to be a cheerleader hit close to home. I had the same aspiration when I was in high school. I grew up in Salt Lake City and have been blind since birth. When I entered high school I was quite shy. I was thrilled to be out of junior high and on to bigger and better things, but I lacked confidence and struggled to accept my blindness. Like any teenager, I was trying to figure out who I was, w

By Chelsea Cook {Music} Landing Among the Stars: When Teachers and Student Work Together by Chelsea Cook From the Editor: Lately articles in the Monitor about education have been about difficulties getting class materials in accessible formats.
