Riding the Rails with Ed Davis
24/02/2022 Duração: 31minBefore the current boom in “van life” and nomadic living, author Ed Davis rode the rails – hopping boxcars and freight trains – from Reno to Vancouver, through the Sierras and up and down the Golden State. As a young man, he lived on $5 a day, worked as a carny, and even slept under the same bridge Kerouac once did. Living as a part-time hobo, he and his friends - the “knights of the road” - experienced a world that no longer exists. Those treks across the country eventually led Ed to become a successful businessman, a champion discus thrower, and a loving husband to his wife, Jan, who on occasion had even hopped the trains with him. From this uniquely American experience, Davis brings us his latest novel The Last Professional (January 25, 2022 – Artemesia Publishing), a compelling story of two men linked by a yearning to explore and experience a simpler way of living. In the vein of Kerouac and London, Davis paints a rich tapestry of life on the move where adventure is truly just a freight car away. Listen i

Claudia Chidester's Trusted Eye
17/02/2022 Duração: 32minVirginia Fontaine fought continually for recognition—as a woman, a photographer, an art curator, and, perhaps most importantly, a liaison between beleaguered German artists and the outside world. Through journals, letters, and photographs, she recorded her uniquely intimate perspective on this period, amid an ever-changing constellation of artists and friends. Her daughter, Claudia Chidester joins us to talk about her new book about this remarkable woman, Trusted Eye: Post–World War II Adventures of a Fearless Art Advocate. Fontaine documented her life from a young age: her struggles at Yale Art School, her year as a newlywed in the British Virgin Islands, and her employment in a munitions factory. Later, she helped the Jewish underground in Europe; traveled with gallerists throughout Germany, Switzerland, and France; tangled with the Monuments Men; and experienced the international reach of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist pursuits. Listen to this riveting discussion about a fascinating woman b

Joann Keder on Making It Happen
10/02/2022 Duração: 32minA writer since the age of ten, Joann Keder wrote her first novel at twelve, but always convinced herself she wasn't good enough, smart enough, etc. In addition, she had a real lack of a "core" or sense of self her entire life. Part of that confusion was due to being an adoptee who didn't fit in with her family or the small town where she grew up. Consequently, she went through several bouts of depression, both large and small. In mid-life though, she took a leap and earned her master's degree in creative writing, not as a career path but to prove she could do it. Fast forward to today, and Joann has written eight novels (two are award-winners) and has several more planned. Listen in today to hear the frank, inspirational story of a person who found her lifeline in writing. Don't miss it! Visit her website JoannKeder.com. Email her at jkederauthor(at)gmail.com. Cassandra Lane on Honoring Our Ancestors
09/12/2021 Duração: 35minWhen Cassandra Lane finds herself pregnant at thirty-five, the knowledge sends her on a poignant exploration of memory to prepare for her entry into motherhood. She moves between the twentieth-century rural South and present-day Los Angeles, reimagining the intimate life of her great-grandparents Mary Magdelene Magee and Burt Bridges, and Burt’s lynching at the hands of vengeful white men in his southern town. We Are Bridges turns to creative nonfiction to reclaim a family history from violent erasure so that a mother can gift her child with an ancestral blueprint for their future. Haunting and poetic, this debut traces the strange fruit borne from the roots of personal loss in one Black family—and considers how to take back one’s American story. Listen in for a wonderful conversation about race, writing, and what we can do to resurrect the memory of our ancestors. Storytelling and Childrens Books with Michael Pellico
07/12/2021 Duração: 32minWhat is the secret to successful children's books? Today we ask author, film producer, and medical researcher Michael Pellico. He grew up in a busy household where both parents worked non-stop to provide for their 11 children. Pellico, as the oldest sibling, took it upon himself to entertain and enlighten his brothers and sisters with creative, escapist, values-based stories. Without even television to distract the kids, Michael held court regularly. He would continue the tradition of telling fantastic stories built around values of friendship, courage, curiosity, and hope to his niece, Sabrina. These delightful stories now form the foundation of his children's book publishing company, Moonbow Publishing. He has authored the first five books with no signs of slowing down.
