Sinopse
My Fellow Americans, Life is actually just a microscopic, deluded moment in time, so let's cut to the freakin' chase. One look at American Idol or the MTV Music Awards can solidify my case.It has been my contention since birth, that the answer to every difficulty we encounter on this sacred yet demented Stone, can be revealed with ultimate clarity through the ultra neurotic engagements of Music, Art, Literature, Film, Poetry and a good Pastrami sandwich. Why would any sane human spend so must time on a film set (Do you know how long you gotta wait until your 8 second deliverance of an edited beyond repair line gets a chance to become a professional embarrassment etched in time forever? ) or expend so much energy in a recording studio, piecing together another ode to a man or woman who could not care less how much love existed within your digestive tract? It's all about hymns and prayers and a quest for mercy and forgiveness and silence and faith and Bukowski and Lenny and Noam Chomsky and Oliver freakin Hardy. So Let's Dance! This site shall explore the reaper, find a way to disarm the stench of injustice, discover some true loves and talk it all over before it's all over.So what's the worst that my desires could produce?Failure? So sue me.I'm going to require your assistance in making as much trouble for the grown-ups as possible.Let the record show that my childish heart yearns to disrupt the madness.Join me Ladies and Germs!

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #39: MENDOCINO by The Sir Douglas Quintet (Smash, 1969)
30/12/2023 Duração: 05minStarting with the salutary opening voice over: “The Sir Douglas Quintet is back, we’d like to thank all our beautiful friends all over the country and all the beautiful vibrations, we love you…” - this Tex-Mex, flower-power rave up let’s you know that you’re in for a groovy ride. Doug Sahm’s Tejana inflected combo from the borderlands broke up after their weed bust, and he relocated to the Bay Area where his head was turned around by the Hippies up there. Inspired by what he was experiencing, he re-recruited 3 of his original compatriots, including his childhood friend, the sizzling Vox organist, Augie Myers, and they produced this powerful tribute to the Northern California scene. I didn’t know much about this group, and what I did know was fabricated. They were dubbed The Sir Douglas Quintet by their record producer in order to capitalize on the British Invasion juggernaut that was happening in ’65, and their first single, She’s About a Mover struck gold. That’s all I knew until I heard this anthem with its

I saw him at Max’s Kansas City, with Bob Marley opening; We trekked out to Roslyn to see him at My Father’s Place, with a crowd so small we were able to stand at his feet in front of the stage; We saw him introduce Born to Run at the Bottom Line, just before the megaton explosion of fame; and finally, the la

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #38: IF I COULD ONLY WIN YOUR LOVE by Emmylou Harris (Reprise, 1975)
21/12/2023 Duração: 05minA major part of my sentimental education was connected to the keening, heart-throbbing tone of Emmylou Harris. And, this cut off her Pieces of the Sky album has me literally in tears every time I hear it. I can’t help it. It’s my romantic ideal personified; perfect love - unattainable, yet always worth striving for. I was acquainted with Emmylou’s plangent sound before that, as muse and partner to the late Gram Parsons. I wore the grooves out on Grievous Angel’s Hickory Wind and Love Hurts, but this solo outing was something from another planet. Boulder to Birmingham, which I understand was a tribute to her fallen comrade is also a gorgeous tear jerker, but this cover of Ira and Charlie Louvin’s 1958 classic evocation of yearning destroys me without fail each time my ears and heart encounter it. Her seamless duet with Herb Pedersen, who follows her swoop for swoop, is flawless, and the longing for soul connection that it demonstrates cannot be described adequately with mere words. You just have to hear it.B

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #37: TIT-WILLOW (From THE MIKADO), sung by Martyn Green, (1936)
15/12/2023 Duração: 05min“On a tree by a river a little Tom Tit, sang willow, tit willow, tit willow…” This how Ko-Ko’s plaintive lament of unrequited love begins. When I was eleven, playing the challenging role of Ko Ko, The Lord High Executioner, in the Lake Massapaug Middle School production of The Mikado, I laboriously committed those delicious lyrics to memory, along some other tasty tongue twisters, - syllable, by succulent syllable, and I loved every minute of it.It started a life-long obsession with -, and performing -, the wicked word-play of WS Gilbert - (played crustily in the film Topsy Turvey by the singular Jim Broadbent). This recording, from the 1936 D’Oyly Carte production, is sensitively rendered by Martyn Green, who tempers its obvious irony with some gravitas, playing quite differently from the more expected, crudely mugged style. Great verbal acrobats like Shakespeare, WS Gilbert, Cole Porter, Stephen Sondheim, and Tom Lehrer - can spin words like atomic particles, releasing a spray of electrons within our bra

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #36: THE BOY FROM NEW YORK CITY by The Ad-libs (1964, Blue Cat)
06/12/2023 Duração: 04minThe Creators, a four man doo wop group from Bayonne, NJ, put Mary Ann Thomas upfront, cut a demo of this song, which they then brought to Lieber and Stoller - and the rest is history: The Boy from NYC was cool. And I, because I came from NYC, I was cool by association. I didn’t own a mohair suit, hell, I didn’t even know what mohair was, but that sounded cool, too. And, don’t forget the pocket full of spendin’ loot, and the finest penthouse she’d ever seen in town. This was a notion of sexual chemistry to which a geeky 12 year old could aspire. I wasn’t the only one: Brian Wilson was so inspired, he wrote the GIRL from NYC, and cribbed the Creator’s back up rhythm for Good Vibrations. “Oowah, oowah, c’mon Kitty": Not too bad for a cool ass ditty.

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #35: TO SIR, WITH LOVE by LULU (1967, EPIC)
01/12/2023 Duração: 05minLulu’s husky croon is unmistakeable. The Scottish shouter is a UK national treasure, and still gorgeous. Picking up the torch from Brenda Lee, and passing it to Miley Cyrus, Lulu was, (along with Dusty Springfield), foundational to the world-wide popularization of white, female voiced R&B. Her 1964 cover of The Isley Brother’s Shout, at the age of 15 cemented her vocal persuasiveness, and To Sir, With Love catapulted her into the dreams of millions of devotional worshippers like me. James Clavell’s film about a black teacher thrown into the deep end of London’s inner city school system, was part of Sidney Poitier’s cinematic triple crown of 1967, following: In the Heat of the Night (for which he won the academy award), and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? Everything about the project was poised for success, and the title song didn’t disappoint - driving to number 1 as it cascaded out of every car radio across America. I was 13 when I saw the film, and it made a big impression on me. Of course, Sidney Poitier

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #34: EVERYTHING I’VE GOT BELONGS TO YOU by Blossom Dearie (Verve, 1957)
26/11/2023 Duração: 04minBlossom Dearie: what a great name! It was her real name, too. Well, Margrethe Blossom Dearie - she dropped the first part, and that was a good choice for Show Biz, I think. And, that voice: light, breathy, girlish, delightfully witty - I loved it from the first time I heard it. And, not only was she a fantastic vocalist, but considered one of the great jazz pianists - Bill Evans was inspired by her chord work; that tells you something. Everything I’ve Got Belongs to You comes off of her first album for Verve, deriving from the Broadway show “By Jupiter” by Rodgers and Hart, which ran for 427 performances in 1942. The Amazonian lyrics juxtaposed with the little girl voice is kinky perfection. And, her articulation - hilarious and sexy, delivers a delightful confection. Though she was born in Upstate New York, she made her bones in Paris when she formed the vocal group The Blue Stars, which later became the famous “Swingle Singers”. Always entrepreneurial, she started her own label, Daffodil Records in ’74. I

"PUT ON A STACK OF 45's"- DIRE STRAITS- "MONEY FOR NOTHING"- Dig This With The Splendid Bohemians - Featuring Rich Buckland and Bill Mesnik -The Boys Devote Each Episode To A Famed 45 RPM And Shine A Light Upon It's Import
18/11/2023 Duração: 23minIn 1985, the British rock band Dire Straits released the song “Money for Nothing.” It is an undeniable rock classic. It also is a superb entry point for—of all things—judging the morality of capitalism. It is worth a listen as well as a classroom lesson. The lyrics relay the perspective of a laborer. As he sees a video of rock musicians on MTV, he expresses envy. He strains in the delivery of appliances while the musicians enjoy great wealth and adoration with little hardship:We got to install microwave ovens, custom kitchen deliveriesWe got to move these refrigerators, we gotta move these color TVsListen hereNow that ain’t workin’, that’s the way you do itYou play the guitar on the MTVThat ain’t workin’, that’s the way you do itMoney for nothin’ and your chicks for freeAs the song proceeds, the envy gives way to anger and resentment. There is injustice—even absurdity—in how wealth is distributed! An honest day’s work should be more valued! No shit.“Money for Nothing” is the dream of every generation. For socie

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #33: THE WANDERER by Dion (Laurie, 1961)
15/11/2023 Duração: 05minThe Wanderer is two minutes, fifty-one seconds of pure swagger. Imagine my surprise when I read a quote from Dion where he said it was essentially a sad song, and that the one of lyrics demonstrated the singer’s existential crisis: “with my two fists of iron - ( I always thought it was “two fifths of wine”) - and I’m goin’ nowhere!” Dion is a Buddha of self-reflection.He has always been my rock and roll Sherpa since the age of 8 when my friend Larry Bader and I would play “Dion and Chubby Checker on tour”. Larry was Dion and I was Chubby (‘cause I was) - we’d put on the records and lip-sync our act. The Beatles took over as an obsession a couple of years later, but Dion was never far from my thoughts: he kept coming back through the decades: in the late 60s as a folky warrior for peace; playing coliseumson the oldie circuit in the 70s; in the 80s and 90s as a grizzled, born again survivor; then, producing a string of hit blues albums in the 2000s, And, he’s still at it, sounding better than humanly possibl

"PUT ON A STACK OF 45's- THE VANGUARD RECORDS STORY - FEATURING " THE ROOFTOP SINGERS "WALK RIGHT IN"- Dig This With The Splendid Bohemians - Featuring Rich Buckland and Bill Mesnik -The Boys Devote Each Episode To A Famed 45 RPM and It's Import
10/11/2023 Duração: 17minVanguard Records is best known for its eclectic catalog of pivotal jazz, folk, rock and blues recordings by iconic artists like Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, Buddy Guy, Charlie Musselwhite, John Fahey, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and countless others. Most recently, Vanguard has carried forward the label's legacy of artistic excellence with a diverse roster including Barenaked Ladies, Indigo Girls, O.A.R. and Collective Soul.Riding the tail end of the popular boom of commercialized Folk Music, Vanguard's unexpected mega-hit "Walk Right In" soared to the top of the pop chart. Looking for a long forgotten treasure to mine, Erik Darling and Bill Svanoe, doing what many had done before them, updated an old string band tune, composed by Gus Cannon and recorded with his Jug Stompers in 1929. They arranged it for TWO 12-String guitars (one of which, a leftie model, had to be specially constructed for Bill), and adding the mellifluous tones of Lynne Taylor to complete

AND THE SPLENDID BOHO GOES TO! - LAIRD CREGAR for "I WAKE UP SCREAMING" (1941) - THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT A NEW SERIES WHERE THEY HONOR A NOTED CHARACTER ACTOR WHOSE CONTRIBUTION TO A FILM ENHANCED IT'S GREATNESS!
10/11/2023 Duração: 22minSamuel Laird Cregar (1914-1944) was the youngest of six sons of Edward Matthews Cregar, a cricketer and member of a team called the Gentlemen of Philadelphia. They toured internationally in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Laird’s mother was the former Elizabeth Smith.Laird Cregar was educated at Winchester College in England, spending his summers as a page boy and bit player with the Stratford-upon-Avon theatrical troupe. Upon completing his schooling, Cregar won a scholarship at California’s Pasadena Playhouse, supporting himself as a nightclub bouncer when funds ran out. So broke that at times he had to sleep in his car, Cregar forced Hollywood to pay attention to him by staging his own one-man show, in which he portrayed Oscar Wilde. After a few minor film roles, Cregar was signed to a 20th Century-Fox contract; among his first major roles was the middle-aged Francis Chesney in Charley’s Aunt, the first of several showcases for the actor’s delightful comic flair. With his sinister portrayal of the psychopat

THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT: THE SUNNY SIDE OF MY STREET with THE "MIGHTY MEZ" - SONGS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD - EPISODE #32: TAKE IT EASY by The Eagles (Asylum, 1972)
10/11/2023 Duração: 05minThere is a corner off Route 66, in Winslow, Arizona which has been memorialized with a statue of the late musician Glen Frey, in front of a Trompe-L’oeil image of a red, flat-bed Ford truck, containing a girl (my Lord) giving him the once over. How many songs can you name that have been so celebrated? Take it Easy, written by neighbors Jackson Browne and Glen Frey, was the cut that launched the juggernaut that was The Eagles - America’s answer to The Beatles, in the shadow of the latter’s dissolution. The joyous, three part harmonies signaled the commercial ascendency of Laurel Canyon Country Rock - and provided a hopeful reset following the emotional bankruptcy of the late 60s. When I took my boys on a road trip to see the Grand Canyon, we stayed overnight in Williams, Arizona, also on route 66. I knew that Williams was not Winslow, but close, and that put a spring in my accelerator as I made the daybreak drive into the park. There is a great “Be here now” mantra in the line: “We may lose, or we may win,
