Larry Norris is the co-founder and executive director of ERIE (Entheogenic Research, Integration, and Education), a group dedicated to the development of entheogenic research and integration models ERIE brings diverse entheogenic speakers, practitioners, and researchers to share their wisdom with the San Francisco/Bay Area community. He is also a PhD student in the East-West Psychology department at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco. His dissertation will review archived ayahuasca experiences from a research center in Florianopolis, Brazil to identify transformational archetypes that induce the insights hidden within the experiences. This summer at CIIS, Larry will be teaching a graduate course called Entheogenic Education: Contemporary Perspectives on Ancient Plant Wisdom in order to discuss the concept of entheogens as educational teachers and cognitive tools. As a dedicated activist and a proponent of cognitive liberty, his efforts are a contribution to not only change

She taught for the Cross Cultural Communications program at University of California Berkley for 19 years.   In 1990, at the invitation of the Maori King Hukapa Mateau of Aotearoa/New Zealand she was asked to come to share her knowledge and sacred stories. It was there she received the name “Te Wahini O Nga Ho O E Wa- Woman of The Four Directions Who Call The People to Action”. The Chumash elder, Sky Eagle, called her one of the great teachers of these times.

Carlos Tanner is the director of the Ayahuasca Foundation in Iquitos, Peru. He has been a student of plant medicine for more than 10 years. He speaks to us here about his experiences over the years with Ayahuasca and how it has transformed his life and also the lives of those who have worked with this plant at his Foundation.

This is our first episode from our series, "The Yage Tapes", in which we will be in conversation with various individuals who have participated in Ayahuasca ceremonies with shamans in various parts of South America. Emma Lucy Shaw is a Scottish/English visionary artist who lost both her parents at an early age and ended up homeless not long after. She stayed with friends, moving from place to place and eventually set off to travel throughout Scandinavia, finding work and shelter when she was able. Her life took a dramatic turn after she journeyed to Peru to participate in ayahuasca ceremonies with shamans in the Amazon. She is now back in the UK where she has found a new and fulfilling life for herself and spends much of her time creating her art.

At 18, John Lockley was serving in the South African army as a medic (during the war with Angola in the 1980s) when he had a strong, prophetic dream calling him to train as a Xhosa Sangoma shaman, within the same tribe of Nelson Mandela and Desmond TutuHe eventually met Mum Ngwevu, a well-known Xhosa Sangoma medicine woman, in one of the poorest townships in South Africa. She had foreseen his arrival in a dream and began his 10-year apprenticeship, giving him the initiated name Ucingolwendaba, meaning messenger or connector between people and cultures.John trained under difficult conditions in the townships of the Eastern Cape. He is unique in being initiated into three timeless traditions: African Shamanism, Yoga and Zen Buddhism, and also holds an honours degree in Clinical Psychology.

Jac O’Keeffe was raised in rural Ireland. With a desire to know more about God, she studied theology and music. Graduating in the 1980′s, she was left disillusioned and a non-believer. Turning her focus to issues of social inequality, she studied adult and community education, and began her career interweaving community development with the arts. In 1997 her life was dramatically changed when her sixth sense awakened. Her personal quest led to that which is beyond the mind – a transcendence of dualistic thought. A frequent editor of the MAPS Bulletin, he is the author of several books, including Mavericks of the Mind, Conversations on the Edge of the Apocalypse, and we speak here about his new book, The New Science of Psychedelics: At the Nexus of Culture, Consciousness, and Spirituality. He lives in Ben Lomond, California.

Jake Ducey left home as a teenager one day, also leaving behind a life of alcohol and drug abuse, to explore the world with a meager savings and adventurous spirit. His journey ended up transforming his life for good when he arrived at a deep knowing that what he was searching for was within himself all the time. He discovered that our destiny is reached only when we have looked deeply inside first.
