Pressure is nothing new. James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote to Jewish Christians in the first century who faced intense pressure. They had been dispersed because of persecution, and they faced increasing pressure to let faith live only in their heads instead of being evidenced in their lives. The longer we live as followers of Jesus, we should realize that the only thing that really matters in ministry is to make disciples. According to Jesus, the longer we make disciples, the clearer it will become that how we use our money is the truest measure of our discipleship, because it reveals where our treasure really is. The truth is, God has woven our relationship with material things into the Scriptures from creation to new creation. He doesn’t distinguish between your “heart” and your money. There is nothing more appropriate than talking about money in church. After almost a year of searching, we reached a milestone weekend for our church where we brought Ryan and Christana Graham in to candidate Ryan as our next potential Senior Pastor. This Town Hall was a time for our congregation to get to know Ryan a little bit, and hear answers to questions for him from our congregation. Questions were submitted in advance by the congregation, and Alden Harm -- an Elder here at Southview -- moderated the event. Which can lead us to wonder or ask, "How do I grow in Christ?", "How do I find freedom from the pulls in my life that often ensnare me?", "How do I change?".
