If ambition defines us, it will never fulfill us. We must find a way to be hungry for more but content with less. How is this possible? We will look at the life of Paul and what he says about finding contentment.

Delaying the fulfillment of our dreams seems to be a part of refining and rescuing ambition. Waiting reminds us that who we are becoming is more important than what we are accomplishing.

James 3:13-16 addresses selfish ambition. Ambition often starts altruistic, but like milk, it easily sours. What starts as a purpose for the common good curves inwardly towards individual success. To guard against self-preoccupation, remember the blessings you have nothing to do with that contributed to your accomplishments; such as the family of your birth and your God given gifts. Take the attitude, “I work hard with what I’ve got” instead of the attitude, “I worked hard for what I’ve got.” Stop pursuing your dreams and instead pursue God’s mission.

We were created by God to have ambition. Ambition can be a noble force for the glory of God. However, we must not let our ambition be taken hostage by our failed motivations and unfulfilled dreams. We need to make the connection between our present opportunities and our future hopes…between our life and God’s glory.
