  • RIP HAWK - 10 Years Ago May 1st - Damage Control Tribute May 4, 2006

    01/05/2016 Duração: 02h43min

To me, it was one of the most tragic deaths in Houston Hip-Hop history. Losing DJ Screw, Pimp C, Big Moe, and so many others... all of those deaths hit me pretty hard. But when DJ Chill called me at 11:30pm on May 1st 2006 to tell me Hawk had been shot, my heart sunk. But at that first moment I really didn't believe it. "Who would shoot Hawk? Why?" To me he was one of the nicest, most honest and reliable people in the entire community. I didn't know anyone who had any problem with Hawk. Within the music community, he was really one of those dudes that everyone liked. And within the Screwed Up Click, he really was the 5 Star General. The passing of his brother Fat Pat in 1998 was a huge hit to the Houston community. Then when Screw passed in 2000, that was about as bad as things could get. Those were horrible deaths to have to deal with and get past. I had a hard time with them both, but to me, Hawk was a real friend. We didn't hang out and BBQ and shit like that, but when I needed to rally the SUC for s

  • Pushermania's Podcast Live from Youth on Record in Denver

    29/02/2016 Duração: 01h04min

Matt Sonzala visits with the youths of Denver's Youth on Record Program. The good people behind Youth On Record believe that young people – those who are both at-risk and written-off – have the potential to turn their lives around. They are committed to bringing proven methods of empowerment and behavioral modification through music education to youth in Colorado who need it the most. Their facility located on Denver's west side is a second home to a lot of great young people with musical aspirations as high as the city they are from (Mile High City, duh). There they can take lessons in hip hop production, multiple instruments, singing, and more and they can use the facilities to create and professionally record their music as well. Listen here for some real life stories from some of the students, and rapper/producer/instructor Kalyn Heffernan of Wheel Chair Sports Camp and jam some music produced and recorded in house by the kids at Youth on Record. Featured artists include Kid G, I$Real, G.C.Y., Mace

Shea Serrano is one of Houston's most recent great success stories. The boy done went from teaching 8th grade with aspirations of becoming a writer, to becoming one of the top young writers in the game covering music and sports. His humorous take on anything and everything, and attention to detail and deft skill are a breath of fresh air in the age of shitty writing on the internet. Boy is top of his game and he will tell you how he got there right here on this podcast. He is the author of The Rap Yearbook and also the man behind the man with the Bun B's Coloring Book. • Hip Hop For Bernie Sanders - Hiero Edition - Tajai of Souls of Mischief & Casual Talk Politics

    22/01/2016 Duração: 01h04min

HUGE! On the latest edition of the Hip Hop for Bernie Sanders Podcast, Matt Sonzala talks to two Bay Area legends who have always been outspoken and released smart, forward thinking, real hip hop music. Tajai of Souls of Mischief and Casual both represent the Hieroglyphics Crew, one of the most successful independent hip hop crews to ever do it. They first broke through in 1993 and both continue to tour the world and even have their own day designated for them in Oakland where they throw an annual hip hop festival for the community. I have admired both of these artists for over 20 years now and I jumped at the chance to talk to them about what we as Americans are facing with this upcoming election. You don't have to endorse Bernie to be on the Hip Hop for Bernie Sanders podcast, you just have to be able to discuss and confront the many issues Bernie is confronting in his campaign, and today we do just that. Tune in, stream it, download it, share it, tell a friend to tell a friend about this podcast. We

  • Damage Control Tribute to Zin - KPFT Houston Jan. 6, 2016 May Zin Rest in POWER!

    20/01/2016 Duração: 03h19min

On Sunday January 3rd, 2016, I lost a brother, and the world lost a leader. My brother Zin and a friend were killed in a tragic crash in Denver, as they sat at a red light and a man in an SUV who was fleeing some firemen who had approached his vehicle as he was asleep at a red light just a couple of blocks away. He hit the gas, reached a speed of about 70mph, and about two blocks down the road, he killed one of my greatest friends. On June 6, 2016 I went back to what I still consider my home base, KPFT in Houston, to gather a group of friends and family in tribute to our brother Zin. We went back to where it all started with he and I. We started the Damage Control program on KPFT on May 23rd, 2002. And it hurt like crazy to come back for this reason, but it raised me and I am sure a lot of people up super high as they heard stories of how Zin touched half of Houston with his great vibes and energies. Dude is still a ray of light shining down on us all. Please share far and wide. All music included on this

  • Rest in Peace Blowfly! Matt Sonzala interviews Blowfly & Dino Lee, Austin, 1993

    18/01/2016 Duração: 50min

This past weekend after learning that the legendary Clarence "Blowfly" Reid had passed away, I got to thinking about just how many times I had the good fortune of seeing him live. My first time was in 1993. I heard he was doing a show in Austin, and all I knew was that he was not only hilarious, but he was also basically the first rapper ever. His "Rap Dirty" single was straight up hip hop, before anyone even knew what hip-hop was. And like the title implies, it was basically a funny ol' sex rhyme. Blowfly hailed from Miami and it's no coincidence that many of the rappers from his town followed suit and released controversial, often over the top dirty songs as well. I wanted to meet the man who had so much influence on the culture that I loved, but really never got the recognition for it, especially not back then. So Eric "CeePlus" Castillo and I hopped in my old ass Toyota station wagon with only an am radio in it and headed to Austin from Houston. We had no hook ups and no connection to Blowfly, and hon

  • Hip Hop For Bernie Sanders - Charleston, SC Debate Edition w/ Ghetto D & 40oz

    12/01/2016 Duração: 44min

In this the second edition of Matt Sonzala's Hip Hop for Bernie Sanders Podcast, Matt sits down with legendary Charleston rapper and activist Omar Fall aka Ghetto D and his comrade 40 oz. to talk about why they endorse Bernie Sanders and are looking forward to the next Democratic Debate happening in their own backyard. They talk the history of Charleston past and present and also discuss solutions for the future. Ghetto D talks passionately about mass incarceration, police brutality, local politics, marijuana legalization and more. A real trooper in his city streets, Ghetto D is involved in local politics on all layers. They give a street level view of their city, and how they feel as though the issues Bernie Sanders is running with could help benefit their community in the long run. There's a lot of deep information in this one, you do not want to miss out. • Pushermania's Podcast - Lench asks "What Happened to Austin?"

    05/01/2016 Duração: 50min

Randomly surfing the local radio stations this past Saturday night, Matt Sonzala stopped on Austin's own community station KAZI 88.7 FM and heard a strong track called "What Happened to Austin?" Thankfully the DJ said the artists name - Lench - directly after the song, and Matt found him right here on Soundcloud. The song is a powerful indictment of what has been happening in Austin, from a real native who has strong roots in both South and East Austin. While he agrees that progress can be good, he also shakes his heads as so much of what he loved about his hometown has disappeared. Lench puts this situation into words like no rapper before him. The song goes deep and Matt Sonzala and Lench have a real talk about, What Happened to Austin? (They both still love it though, mostly) Pushermania Podcast Network

  • REST IN PEACE BROTHER ZIN! Reprogram Radio Freestyle w/ Black Eyed Peas

    05/01/2016 Duração: 09min

Today I lost one of my realest brothers, Anthony "Zin" Mills. We started the Damage Control radio program together on KPFT in Houston in May of 2002, the same week my daughter Eva was born. We had some incredible times and I will dig up more exclusive audio for his tribute show this Wednesday Night, January 6th, 11pm Central on www.kpft.org or 90.1 fm in Houston. This audio here was from a show I also used to do on KPFT with DJ's CeePlus and Samplistik called Reprogram Radio. Black Eyed Peas were in town for a show at I think the Engine Room and Zin was rolling with them that day and brought them to KPFT, where he happened to have his band set up. Suffice it say it really went down. May our brother Zin rest in peace - power - paradise and may he never be forgotten...
