  • Quest for the Living God w/ Elizabeth Johnson

    17/11/2013 Duração: 46min

The 20th century was an amazing time for the doctrine of God. All of a sudden the church unleashed a bunch of voices previously silenced to hear their testimony, explorations & experiences of God... and theology got so much better.  Legendary Catholic Theologian - Elizabeth Johnson - is on this episode of the Barrel Aged Homebrewed Podcast.  We discuss her book Quest for the Living God  which is simply one of the best introductions to theology I know.  It is super readable, intellectually honest, and energizing for the theo-nerd brain.  I have given this book as a gift to a bunch of my friends and constantly get told "wow that was way too clear for a theology book!" With over 5 years of interviews under out belt – having gone from just friends listening to 50k – realizing that there are a ton of people who can’t get the best interviews from the past – let us introduce you to Homebrewed Christianity Barrel Aged podcast. I will be re-releasing the best interviews from the early days, super-short new intros,

  • 12 Years A Slave: Movie Review and Theological Reflection

    09/11/2013 Duração: 01h22min

Bo sat down with J. Ryan Parker last month after they were given a sneak-peek at the movie 12 Years A Slave. After a review of the merits in the movie-making elements of the film, the talk turns theological.  If you haven't seen the movie, you may want to skip to the 13-14 minutes mark to avoid some big spoilers.  Around the 38th minute mark is when things turn theological. You can find Parker's review over at Pop Theology [here] You can find Bo's theological reflection [here]  This week’s episode is sponsored by The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. • Marcus Borg, Tony Jones, & the Resurrection w/ Jonnie #NerdOut

    22/10/2013 Duração: 01h29min

Jonnie joined my in the HBC Headquarters in Redondo Beach. In the podcast we start discussing the resurrection exchange between Marcus Borg & Tony Jones [aka ToJo] & then end up on the necessity of a physical resurrection, atonement, eschatology, evangelical's Easter concern, and Pannenberg. Attempting to fill in for the BoDaddy is a difficult task but Jonnie did a pretty good job.  I think I will let him back on the TNT w/ the BoDaddy so Bo can make sure we actually stay on topic.  You will notice I actually start a couple lists of theological options and then get distracted by Pannenberg and John Cobb.  The BoDaddy is a pro and knows to limit such theological temptations.  During the podcast we drank the Burning Bush IPA and gave a shout out to 350.org for climate change info. In the podcast we discuss these books: 1) Bodies and Souls, or Spirited Bodies? & Beyond Liberalism and Fundamentalism by  Nancey Murphey 2) Jesus: God & Man by Wolfhart Pannenberg 3) Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time by

  • Kirk Have I Loved But Tripp?

    26/09/2013 Duração: 01h07min

Daniel Kirk is on the podcast.  The most sensational Theo-Blogger, Homebrewing, Fuller Professor of New Testament, and fellow Wake Forest Demon Deacon [he also went to Duke and UNC Chapel Hill but I forgive him for that... Go Deacs!] is on the podcast with a bunch of topics he's looking to settle with me.  We had an amazing local for this conversation... only Orange County's greatest brewery... the Bruery.  Not only is the Bruery in my Top 10 list of Craft Breweries but Deacon Brian White is one of their master of the taps. Kirk's previous visits to the podcast include this LIVE one from Mark Scandrette's house party in San Fran with Philip Clayton and a sweet discussion of Easter recorded during Holy Week. • "We Are All One": Human Rights Campaign Panel Discussion From the Wild Goose Festival

    28/08/2013 Duração: 01h03min

One of the highlights of Wild Goose Festival 2013 was a panel discussion organized by the Human Rights Campaign and hosted by Dr. Sharon Groves, the director of HRC's Religion and Faith Program. In Groves words, "2013 will go down in the history books as one of the most pivotal years for religious leaders working on justice issues. People of faith in unprecedented numbers were instrumental in bringing about the tremendous gains the LGBTQ community has enjoyed, culminating in the Supreme Court decision to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). People of faith also saw the gut-wrenching losses to sacred Civil Rights legislation, most particularly in the Supreme Court’s other decision to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, for which many have given their lives. The effects of these two decisions rest heavily on our collective conscience and forces us to recommit to Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin’s core organizing tenet that 'we are all one.'" • 10 Dirty Secrets About Being a Minister w/ Greg Horton

    02/08/2013 Duração: 01h18min

There are things only ministers know about being a minister.  They aren't all pretty & they can even lead you to leave the church and possibly the faith.  You get to hear 10 Dirty Secrets About Being a Minister with our guest and ex-pastor now a skeptic Greg Horton. Greg Horton was one of the inspirations behind starting the podcast.  I have stalked him online for a long time and then we got to have some fun in person on my visit to Oklahoma.  It was turned into this popular episode of the podcast.   Way back when he had a podcast called 'the Parish' on the wired parish podcast network. Back then he was an emergent Christian and has since left the building. Throughout his journey I have loved following his blog, hearing about his undergrad religion and ethics students, and thinking through some of the serious criticisms he has leveled against the church. Plus he also does some wine reviews. In this Episode Greg and I discuss his top ten list of things about being a minister you just don't know or understan
