Our FEATURE today focuses on the US equity markets which are exhibiting all the signs of being on the cusp of a bear market. We examine a number of past major bear markets and the aftermath. Of significance, did a Recession follow the event? Black Monday in October 1987 is quite meaningful. The DOW suffered a 22.5% loss that Monday which still remains as the largest one day decline in US market history and continued to drop almost 40% from its' historical high. Re-markedly the equity markets rallied on a consistent basis thereafter and there wasn't a Recession. The 2008 market collapse, in contrast, preceded a severe Recession that lasted for several years. Our attention focuses on the current market and the economy and what events could curtail or limit an economic downturn.
