It is a thin wafer made from unleavened bread with pressed images of angels, the Blessed Mother, or Jesus. It is blessed by the priest on the first Sunday of Advent. It is an Eucharisitic represenation of Mass and reminder that Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus.  The father begins by breaking off a piece and handing the oplatek to his wife.
