People will tell you to "follow your heart." But that's what we always do. How's your spizzerinktum level today? I learned a new word listening to this message. It isn't Greek or Hebrew, or even Yiddish. Spizzerinktum is an American word that means "vim, energy, an overmastering will to succeed." Are we hallucinating enough? If you see things that aren't there, that isn't good; we need to get you checked out. But what if you see things that really are there, though others can't see them? There's a surprise member in the Faith Hall of Fame! In Hebrews 11, alongside Moses and Abraham and Sarah and Jacob, did you expect to see Jesus? All of our other faith heroes are imperfect. How would you like your faith to be remembered? The saints of the Old Covenant didn't have any problem thinking about their death, or what would happen after it. In fact, some of them used that defining event to make a statement to the world. We think of a "Last Will and Testament" as a document about the disposal of our property. In our "instant gratification" culture, Christians need to be the counter-culture. We want one-minute rice, same-day delivery, and even a 90-day fiancée. If you see a very old lady in the checkout line with a cart full of diapers and baby food, that's just Sarah! The aged wife of Abraham, taking Lamaze classes - that's funny. If death is "Game Over," then God lied. "All these died in faith, not having received the promises," we read in Hebrews 11. So either the Almighty reneged on His word to His most devoted servants, or they weren't after their "best life now." Noah believed that the Flood was coming, but he believed in something else, too: life after the flood! Noah is one of two men of faith we'll look at, today. The other is Father Abraham. There's something about shepherds. Before David became the leader of a nation, he was a leader of sheep. It was lowly herdsmen "abiding in the fields" who heard heaven's announcement of the Messiah's arrival. A shepherd has time to think and meditate on the words of God. And it's hard to develop a big ego, as a shepherd. The keeper-of-sheep Abel heads the list of those "approved by God" because of their faith. And he stands in stark contrast to his proud brother, Cain. "Now, faith is..." - that sounds like we're going to get a definition, doesn't it? The King James reads: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." But it's hard to understand what that could mean. More recent translations propose, "...the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Would you like to be certified by God? Hebrews 11 gives us a list of Old Testament folks who received the divine seal of approval. And they all got that recognition the same way: by faith. That's not the "easy way," either, as all of them would testify! Since faith is an intangible quality, it helps to see examples of how it works in a human life. "He who endures to the end shall be saved." Jesus was talking specifically about people at the very end, enduring some pretty horrific persecution. But there might be a general principle in that statement. I think we could agree that all of us will go through some rough times, and we'll have to come out on the other side with our faith intact. The devil gets very chatty with us in the desert. You've done the right thing, you've obeyed God - you've paid the price for that - and now you're waiting. It feels like you're in a dry wasteland. The person who has "trampled underfoot the Son of God, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace" - who is that? The crimes outlined in Hebrews 10:29 are shocking. The punishment for those offenses would be "terrifying." But who is this arrogant scoffer? Could it be a Christian?
