  • 480 Holly Worton ~ Making Your Adventures Non-Negotiable

    03/10/2022 Duração: 24min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! This episode is a great companion to episode 377, where I talked about How to Prioritize Your Hobbies and Adventures. In that episode, I discussed the practical side of prioritizing your hobbies and adventures. I also covered how to determine how much free time you have to devote to your hobbies, how to design your ideal week and see how your hobbies fit in, how to get clear on why your hobbies are so important to you, and how to see if your mindset is supporting you in making your hobbies a priority. In this week's episode, I'll be talking more about the concept of making your adventures non-negotiable and the mindset around this. I'm very mindful of how I spend my time, and I hope this episode helps you to use your time in the best way for you.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What does it mean for something to be non-negotiable? 26/09/2022 Duração: 42min

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Jay Worthy. He’s got a great concept called 28 Summers that I look forward to sharing with you.   About Jay Worthy Jay Worthy is the host of the 28 Summers podcast and co-host of the Man Alive podcast (launching Summer 2022). Jay got his start in life as an instructor teaching members to use gym equipment for free, so he could get a free membership for himself – two decades later he was the first non-US CEO of the $1 billion company that made that equipment!   After an adventurous childhood, his life lost its adventurous edge. Work and other commitments quickly took priority, and his passion and desire for adventure were suppressed to make way for his growing workload and other commitments. Through a series of life-changing moments and a period of intense stress and depression in his early 40’s, he knew something had to change. Today he is a Vice President in a Fortune 500 corporation with a determination to show that living a life of purpose and earning a living ar

  • 478 Holly Worton ~ The Importance of Showing Up for Your Adventures

    19/09/2022 Duração: 24min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! Last week, I was interviewing Erica Terblanche for episode 483 and we talked a bit about the importance of showing up. It was just a quick mention, and I made note of it because I knew I wanted to dive deeper into the topic on a solo episode. In fact, I made several notes of concepts that I wanted to explore on upcoming solo episodes.   “Showing up” is something I've been reflecting on lately as I prepare for my black belt grading in December (fingers crossed). I've been showing up for classes more than ever before. I've been showing up consistently, and I've been focusing on getting better—and, guess what? It's working. Showing up for our adventures (and other things in life) has great power to change our lives and ourselves.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What is showing up and why is it important  How showing up changes you and your life How to show up for the important things in life Troubleshooting your process for showing up How to get star

I get asked a lot about how women can stay safe in the outdoors, and so I’m excited to invite someone on the show who is an actual expert in this field. Training in some type of self-defense technique is incredibly useful not only in the outdoors but in our day-to-day lives. Allison posts about backcountry hygiene, solo hiking for women, and more.   As you know, I tend to over plan my life, which sometimes leads to overwhelm and frustration. • 473 Holly Worton ~ The Power of Mindset in Sports and Adventure Performance

    15/08/2022 Duração: 26min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! I just had a chat with Eric Deeter this afternoon for his podcast. You may remember Eric from episode 468, where we talked about the “ultramarathon mindset.” In it, he mentioned that a lot of people think that to train for a race, they just need to follow a plan and do the physical workouts. They don't realize that they could also benefit from working on their mindset.   This led me to think about a topic that had been on the back of my mind for a while: sports mindset. Now, I've already done an episode on this, back in mid-2021 with Jane Talbot. But the mindset work I do with myself has been paying off lately, and I've been seeing very clear results. I've been wanting to talk about this and share with you how you can make mindset work a part of your own training plan.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What is a sports mindset and why is it important What is a subconscious mindset and why is it important How to get started with mindset work How to g

  • 472 Richard Hill ~ Adventures in Stealth Camping

    08/08/2022 Duração: 30min

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Richard Hill, otherwise known as Day Tripper. I first discovered him earlier this year when I was looking for videos on the Coast to Coast. From there, I started watching his other videos about his outdoor adventures. I was particularly interested in his videos on stealth camping. This is a type of wild camping that’s commonly done in more urban or semi-urban environments, where the aim is to go unnoticed. I’ve been wanting to try this for myself, so I thought I’d get more tips from an expert before getting started. There’s some great advice about stealth camping in this episode, and I hope it inspires you to give it a try.    About Richard Hill Richard has a busy stressful job managing properties on Regent Street and found he needed to find time out each week to recharge his batteries. So just over 2 years ago Day Tripper was born where he heads out for an outdoor mini adventure every week. Sometimes it’s hiking part of a long-distance footpath, other times it’s wi

He was a guest on episodes 422 and 370, where we talked about Adventures in Audacious Goal Setting and How Outdoor Adventures Can Help You Make Better Decisions In Life. Now he's back, and we're talking about goal setting for our adventures and other areas of life. I find that when I achieve a goal in my adventures, it really expands my perspective of what's possible for me in other areas of life, too. And that goes both ways. 11/07/2022 Duração: 42min

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Eric Deeter. He’s an ultramarathon runner and mindset coach—two things I really love talking about. In this episode, we discuss what Eric calls the “100-mile mindset” or the “ultramarathon mindset.” This mindset, which is something that can be applied to all areas of life, embodies lessons learned from running ultramarathons. We discuss how to apply ultramarathon principles to life, such as making gradual progress, pacing, and managing energy and emotions. We also talk about how to pivot and troubleshoot while still keeping the end goal in mind. I hope you find this episode interesting and useful!   About Eric Deeter Eric Deeter is a mindset coach, ultramarathon runner, and ChiRunning + Walking instructor. • 467 Holly Worton ~ Hike Your Own Hike, On The Trail And In Life

    04/07/2022 Duração: 19min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! This episode was inspired by a novel I recently read, called The Trail. Some of the characters were a bit judgmental about other hikers, despite the fact that they were aware of the concept “hike your own hike.” This is something I've seen a lot in books about the Camino de Santiago, and it always grates on my nerves.   “Hike your own hike” is a concept that I think is super important, not just on the trail and on our adventures, but in life.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What it means to HYOH on the trail and in life Why HYOH is so important The only one “right way” to do an adventure How you can HYOH on the trail and in life How practicing HYOH can help with self-esteem and self-trust   Things I Discussed The Trail: a novel, by Ethan Gallogly https://amzn.to/3bo05vK   Related Episodes 411 Holly Worton ~ Who Do You Need to Be for The Adventures You Want to Have? • 466 Holly Worton ~ Adventures in Integration

    27/06/2022 Duração: 23min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! This episode is based on a request from a listener, who wrote the following: I would love to hear your thoughts about the seasons we go through, especially rest and quiet, when it doesn't feel like we are "actively growing" but maybe it's a time for letting everything settle in or preparing for the next big leap. How do you mentally, emotionally, spiritually switch gears, what strategies do you use to maximize the energy you do have during those times, how do you manage any angst for not being active? (that may be way more than one podcast episode-- :) I've had this topic on my list for a while, and now that I feel I'm in Integration Mode (also known as the Messy Middle) I thought it would be the perfect time to discuss this. Often we hear about “integration” after having a healing session, but our personal adventures may often require integration time as well.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn How to integrate after your adventures Letting everythi

  • 464 Robert Bendetti ~ How to Hike the Grand Canyon Rim2Rim2Rim Trail

    13/06/2022 Duração: 48min

I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Robert Bendetti. Last year, he hiked through the Grand Canyon from the south rim to the north rim and back to the south rim (also known as the Rim2Rim2Rim). The route he took was 50 miles in length, with 22,000 feet (6,705 meters) of elevation change. He did this solo and unsupported in just 23 hours, on a day that reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius).   I’m not great with heat, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever make it over to Arizona to hike the Rim2Rim2Rim. But I’ve seen videos of it, and the route looks absolutely gorgeous. If you want to get an idea of what it looks like, check out the links below for a video.   About Robert Bendetti Husband, father, hiker, and ultra-runner (ok, more like ultra-jogger). • 463 Holly Worton ~ There's No Failure, Only Feedback: When Our Adventures Go “Wrong”

    06/06/2022 Duração: 22min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! I've talked quite a bit about success on this podcast, mostly back in the day when I was discussing business. I've also spoken on failure, most notably back in episode 341, which is a great companion to this one.   I've been reflecting on my goals for this year, and how I've adjusted them from their original versions. I've had to change my timeline for my two big goals, and I'm only just now coming to terms with that. Because my episode on How to Know When You're Putting Too Much Pressure on Yourself was such a hit, I thought you might find this topic useful.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn Why a “failure” isn't your final outcome or result How this attitude helps us to develop a growth mindset How to reframe things we previously labeled as “failures” How to shift your perspective on your “failures” Questions to ask yourself so you can reframe your “failures” as learning opportunities   Things I Discussed Backpacking With Friends: Questions You

  • 462 Holly Worton ~ Overcoming the Fear of Solo Walking and Adventures

    30/05/2022 Duração: 28min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! I've been asked to comment on this topic a couple of times in recent weeks, so I thought it would be worth exploring this issue a little more. I'm not going to talk about how to stay safe in the outdoors in terms of practical knowledge and skills.   I'm going to address the biggest fear that most people talk to me about when we discuss solo walking and adventures: fear of other people, namely men. I feel like I've been skirting around this topic for years now, focusing more on how to stay safe by learning navigation skills and how to pack the 10 essentials—when really, most women I speak to are simply afraid of other human beings.   In this episode, I talk about how I've overcome some of my fears (and how I'm not totally fearless, even today). I also share my number one top tip for gaining confidence in the outdoors—and elsewhere in life. Can you guess what it is?   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn How to have solo adventures with confidence How to o

    23/05/2022 Duração: 01h02min

I'm back again, with another solo episode! I just returned from walking Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, which was a huge uplevel for me. It was a longer trail than I'd ever walked before, and I was camping along the whole way, which was new for me. It meant that I'd have to carry a lot more in my pack than usual.   All in all, it was a fantastic adventure! Many lessons were learned, and I still need to troubleshoot some issues before I do something like this again (for example, I need to learn how to better deal with wet conditions). I hope to inspire you to check out Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk.   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn What is Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk How Wainwright's Coast to Coast is different from other trails How walking with other people was different to my usual solo adventures How to plan your Coast to Coast adventure Why this book might be different from my normal walking books   Things I Discussed Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk  Alfred Wainwright
