  • S2 Ep65: The UNIT PodKast

    05/07/2012 Duração: 44min

You lucky people! Not content with gushing over Season 7 in last week's podKast, this time around Christian Cawley and James McLean discuss the wonder that is UNIT, that Dad's Army-esque band of brothers operating out of an ever-moving HQ, combating alien attacks with or without the help of the Doctor. From The Web of Fear through to Planet of the Dead, we (mostly) avoid the UNIT dating issues by focusing instead on the personnel - the Brigadier, Captain Yates and Sergeant Benton - and the possibility that the modern incarnation of the organisation could have been done somewhat differently. And possibly with more success!

  • S2 Ep64: Podcast Celebrates Doctor Who Season 7 (1970)

    29/06/2012 Duração: 46min

In honour of the late Caroline John, this Doctor Who podcast focuses almost completely (with a quick mention of Daleks and asylums) on Season 7, the make-or-break series from 1970 starring Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, John as Dr Liz Shaw and Nick Courtney as the legendary Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart. This week, it's just James McLean and Christian Cawley, but don't let the absence of regular Brian Terranova put you off... Let us know if you have any thoughts of your own on this Season 7 or Caroline John! Remember, if you enjoy the show, find us on Apple Podcasts, where your reviews will help the show considerably.

  • S2 Ep63: When a Doctor Who Costume Goes Wrong

    23/06/2012 Duração: 48min

What happens when to all intents and purposes, it seems that a Doctor Who costume is just wrong? This week's Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") turns its attention to the matter of the Doctor's sartorial elegance (or in some cases, lack of...) There isn't a single incarnation of the friendly Time Lord who hasn't raised eyebrows with his choice of attire. While some choices have been great, others have been... less successful, shall we say. Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean have a right old chat about the situation in the latest podKast, concluding with a declaration of their individual favourite looks across Doctor Who's history. We need your reviews! Head to Apple Podcasts to leave a rating and review, and we’ll read it out. Deal? Not on Apple Podcasts? • S2 Ep62: Previewing Robots of Death Live

    10/06/2012 Duração: 16min

Running from July 1st at the Fab Cafe in Manchester is a stage adaptation of Robots of Death, the classic 1977 Doctor Who serial written by Chris Boucher. Behind the production is Gareth Kavanagh, and he makes a special appearance on this week's podKast (with a K) to discuss that and other shows with a Doctor Who theme that are lined up for the summer. We'll have full confirmed details later this week for Robots of Death, it's stage-sequel Storm Mine and an appearance by Philip Martin (Vengeance on Varos) but in the meantime, click play to enjoy! Do let us know if you have anything to say about this podKast by leaving your comments below or dropping us a line on Facebook or Twitter. • S2 Ep61: Steven Moffat Wins a Special Bafta

    03/06/2012 Duração: 32min

Chewing the fat on what has been taking place in the Doctor Who world lately are Brian Terranova, James McLean and Christian Cawley, who despite their obvious, unrivalled professionalism on the podKast haven't received a Bafta lately (or, indeed, at all). Fear not, however, at least one of them has been in the same room as two of the subjects of this week's podKast with a K - Steven "The Grand Moff" Moffat (aka The Moffinator) and Matt Smith. This week we look at Steven Moffat's much-deserved Bafta award and some of the odd reaction to this on Twitter, as well as chat about Matt Smith carrying the Olympic torch (and being slightly distracted by the issue of blanket coverage of the subject). If you’ve enjoyed the show, please head to Apple Podcasts to leave a rating and review. Any new reviews will be read out. Not on Apple Podcasts? • S2 Ep56: Doctor Who Fan Films and Stage Productions

    28/04/2012 Duração: 50min

With a plethora of Doctor Who fan films and stage productions making the news over the past few weeks, we decided to bring them all together in one big podKast (with a "K") discussion! From Gareth Kavanagh's production of The Robots of Death (the first night of which will star Blake's 7's Paul Darrow) to the new interpretation of The Power of the Daleks written by, directed and starring Nick Scovell by way of Dennis Spielman's Who-inspired Time Traveling Troupe improv web series, we cover a wide range of opinions and thoughts. Featuring an interview with Dennis Spielman and a discussion about the pitfalls of planning and producing a fan film. References for this week's podKast: The Ultimate Fan Film? Robots of Death: LIVE! • S2 Ep53: Doctor Who Scriptwriter Robert Holmes Podcast Special

    07/04/2012 Duração: 47min

This week's Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") features regulars Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean discussing the legendary Robert Holmes, one of the classic series' most prolific and remarkable writers... ...or was he? Well, that's the crux of the conversation, which follows on from James' assertion that as good as Holmes was, a good portion of his serials weren't all that good and his reputation is slightly overstated. There begins a vast chat in which we discuss and compare Holmes, Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat.

  • S1 Ep58: PodKast with an Eternity Clock

    25/03/2012 Duração: 38min

The history of Doctor Who videogames is littered with good intentions, but sadly along the way there have been many disappointments. With the release of Doctor Who: Worlds in Time and Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, BBC Worldwide hope to push the concept beyond the disappointment of Return to Earth or Dalek Attack. But just what will it take? Featuring an interview with BBC Worldwide's Simon Harris, this week's (delayed) podKast (with a "K") features James McLean, Christian Cawley (and Brian Terranova) discussing games such as Destiny of the Doctors and Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. Using the player above you can enjoy the podKast right now. Alternatively, you will also find this podKast listed on iTunes, and most other places you can find podcasts.

  • S2 Ep50: A PodKast in the Shada

    15/03/2012 Duração: 35min

One of the key elements of our Shada month here at Kasterborous is the podKast (with a "K") in which we discuss the release of the new adaptation by Gareth Roberts, the original abandoned production, the attempts to remount with other Doctors, John Nathan-Turner's clever use of Tom Baker to narrate it in the mid 1990s and ultimate the audio version from 2003. We also try to get to the bottom of this fascinating question: if Shada had been completed, would we be thrilled by it as a classic? Frankly, for a TV serial that was never completed there is an awful lot to talk about!

  • S2 Ep49: Remembering Regular Doctor Who Guest Actor Philip Madoc

    05/03/2012 Duração: 23min

The late, great Philip Madoc is the core of our Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") this week, as we discuss his appearances in The Krotons, The War Games, The Brain of Morbius and The Power of Kroll. Probably best known as the War Lord or Mehendri Solon, Madoc also appeared in the second Dalek movie, Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 AD in 1966. Sadly Madoc, born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales passed away at the weekend following a short illness, aged 77. Born in 1934 he had a career stretching over 50 years and was one of the most compelling British character actors of his generation. There is barely a famous TV show from the 1960s and 1970s that he didn't appear in. You can find out more thanks to BBC News; our typed obituary will appear later on but in the meantime you can find more information about his long and varied career below. • S2 Ep48: Exploring Doctor Who: The Dark Dimension

    02/03/2012 Duração: 53min

Back in 1993, Doctor Who fans were tempted with an early reprieve to the show's cancellation two years earlier when BBC Enterprises entered into an agreement to start production on a straight-to-video 30th anniversary special, The Dark Dimension (aka Lost in the Dark Dimension). Over the  years Doctor Who fans have been lead to believe that the eventually-cancelled project was scuppered by Philip Segal, producer of the 1996 TV Movie. However recent research published in fanzine (a term that does the publication a disservice) Nothing at the End of the Lane reveals that Segal has at best overstated his role. The real story behind The Dark Dimension is one of bad decision making, poor budgeting and almost no communication with the key people involved, resulting in a production that almost literally crumbled. It is this research that forms the basis of our discussion this week, along with a few words about the possibility of Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch playing the Master in the upcoming 50th annivers

  • S2 Ep47: Cybermen vs. Borg: Which Is the Best Cyborg Villain?

    23/02/2012 Duração: 45min

With the news of a Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover series from IDW, we decided to have a look in depth at the Cybermen and how we felt they had been handled by various producers over the years. Referencing everything from Tenth Planet to Earthshock, Rise of the Cybermen to Closing Time, we attempt to establish where the Cybermen have gone wrong - if at all. After all, the Borg could be described as being "Cybermen done right" - they weren't conceived as basic storm troopers and have a fascinating, developed back story, something latterly ignored in the case of Cybermen. On the other hand, it could be argued that the Borg degenerated into "insert threat here" antagonists in their later appearances in Star Trek. It could be that the whole Cybermen vs Borg argument is a lot tougher than we first thought... We need your reviews! Head to Apple Podcasts to leave a rating and review, and we’ll read it out. Deal? • S2 Ep42: Retcon: the Lost Peter Cushing Doctor Who Audio Script

    18/01/2012 Duração: 33min

Surprised by the discovery of a long-lost Doctor Who audio script recorded by Peter Cushing and written by Malcolm Hulke? We certainly were, and when contacted by the Nothing at the End of the Lane chaps last week we had to double-take. If like us reading about the new material in the Times wasn't quite enough for you, the latest edition of the most thorough of fan publications is probably where you should be heading right now (www.endofthelane.co.uk/magazine.html). No doubt like us you also felt that this has all come as something as a complete surprise. James McLean, Brian Terranova and Christian Cawley decided to tackle this particular topic in their latest podKast, dovetailing off occasionally to discuss the 1960s Dalek movies starring Peter Cushing. Not listened to our podKast yet? You can "entertain" yourself with our unique brand of anarchic Whovian whimsy for around 30 minutes by subscribing on iTunes, where you'll find a review. (We didn't write it.)

  • S2 Ep41: Doctor Who Midnight Live Show in Manchester PLUS Kotoricon

    16/01/2012 Duração: 34min

Last week Brian Terranova and Christian Cawley were both fortunate enough to be able to visit some live Doctor Who-related events, so we're focussing on discussing these topics this week. Brian was invited onto a Doctor Who panel at the Kotoricon event, so regaled the team with stories of cosplay and topics that were discussed. Meanwhile Christian travelled to Manchester to view the live (Doctor-free) performance of Russell T Davies' "Midnight". Poor old James did nothing, but that's okay on this occasion as he is able to ask the right questions on your behalf, dear listener. If you haven't listened to our podKast yet, our listener is getting lonely so if you do feel like trying it you can entertain yourself with Whovian whimsy for 30 or so minutes by finding us on Apple Podcasts, where you'll find some surprisingly complimentary reviews...

  • S2 Ep40: Missing Episodes Galaxy Four and The Underwater Menace Found!

    09/01/2012 Duração: 36min

The latest Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") discusses the Missing Believed Wiped event in December and the discovery of long-lost 1960s episodes of Doctor Who. With Christian Cawley, Brian Terranova and James McLean

  • S2 Ep39: The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe Reviewed

    28/12/2011 Duração: 44min

After a short break we're back with a review of the 2011 Doctor Who Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe. Regular listeners will know that we took a break from the podKast (with a "K") in mid-December to let the core team of Christian, Brian and James to buy presents and prepare for the big day. But now we're back and naturally we're looking at the latest Doctor Who Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe which aired on Christmas Day around the world. Did we like it? Did James throw Brian's new cricket ball through the Kasterborous Towers TV screen when Amy Pond appeared at the end? Well you'll have to click play to find out... If you're new to our podKasts you can find us on Apple Podcasts where you can also leave a review! We hope you enjoy our first chat for a few weeks - we certainly enjoyed it and you might be interested to find out just which members of the team enjoyed the episode...

  • S2 Ep38: Doctor Who Podcast Discusses Sonic Screwdriver

    10/12/2011 Duração: 53min

It's a Christian-free zone in the latest Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") as our great leader makes plans to continue the expansion of our noble Doctor Who website. As a result, this will be the final podKast until the week following The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, but fear not as this week's podKast features Brian A Terranova and James McLean discussing the sonic screwdriver and its impact and place in Doctor Who lore. From humble beginnings in 1968's Fury from the Deep to its modern-day place as a Tricorder-like device, James and Brian discuss the way in which the device is used, has been brought in and out of the Doctor's box of tricks over the years and pick favourite sonic screwdriver moments.

  • S2 Ep36: Will Harry Potter's David Yates Produce a Doctor Who Movie?

    26/11/2011 Duração: 42min

A little later than intended, the latest Kasterborous podKast (with a "K") features Brian Terranova, James McLean and editor Christian Cawley discussing the recent events in the Doctor Who universe, notably the Christmas episode title reveal and trailer from the Children in Need event last week. Of course, we had to have a chat about harry Potter director David Yates' supposed Doctor Who movie project, a topic which we suspect will run and run over the next few months. Whether The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe is a good title or not doesn't really come into it - we're more interested in the inclusion of heavy Christmas trappings for a second time. While Russell T Davies' Doctor Who tended to place Christmas in a more day-to-day context, Steven Moffat seems to place a greater emphasis on the traditional western view of snow, ice, hot fires, dark, creepy rooms, celebration and feast. You can find out just what we think and hope for via this player:

  • S2 Ep35: Bigger on the Inside: the Magic of the TARDIS

    20/11/2011 Duração: 53min

This week's podKast (with a "K") brings the conversation around to the TARDIS, as Christian and James discuss the magic behind the Doctor's bigger-on-the-inside blue box, its various external configurations and the varying interior dimensions that it has enjoyed over the years. Meanwhile, Brian A. Terranova gets to grips with Siri to find out what she/he thinks about the design of the TARDIS interior... before things get a little personal, that is. We've also got a special treat for our listener - if you wouldn't mind scrolling down to the bottom of this page, madam, you will find a couple of useful links that will inform and entertain after listening to this week's show.
