At The Hops -beer & Music Podcast

Hey, its our fiftieth episode! And what are we doing for it? Well, the usual, drinking beer and playing music. Chas E, Mike Mitchell and Adia K check out two beers including The Little Guy from Calf Killer Brewing in Sparta, Tn and the Coffee Oatmeal from Good People Brewing in Birmingham, Alabama. And, in honor of the Kentucky Derby, we play a brand new game that blends horse and music trivia. Imagine that! All this plus a round of Top 6, some music news from Adia K, and original music from your hosts, Chas E and Mike Mitchell.

Chas E, Mike Mitchell and Adia K do a bit of beer tasting, music playing, and venture out to one of Nashville’s best live music venues - Belcourt Taps. First off, we do some beer tasting with a special 10 Year IPA from Yazoo Brewing. Next, we get a special unplanned performance from our own Mike Mitchell, check out the Top 6 ‘Power Workout Songs,’ hear some news from Adia K, and finally check out Nashville’s Belcourt Taps. You’ll hear some live performances from Mike and Chas and get the lowdown on one of Nashville’s best music venues.

Singer/songwriter Danika Holmes is back with musician extraordinaire Jeb Hart. Danika and Jeb have just finished their latest cd Balance which was mastered by Grammy winner Joseph Palmaccio. Danika and Jeb play two songs from Balance live in our studio and give us a preview of their latest album with the track “Breathe In Let Go.” We also check out a great craft beer from Jackalope Brewery called the Romp Red Rye Ale, and hear some alternative drink ideas from our special guest co-host, AC. Add in a our newest “Game of Lyrics” and altogether it’s a show you won’t want to miss.

We are getting a little retro on At The Hops this week, and take a look at some of our favorite moments, including interviews and songs with Adrian Belew, Danika Holmes and Jeb Hart, and Stacey K. Black.

Singer/songwriter Steven James Wylie joins Chas E. and Mike Mitchell with songs and stories guaranteed to inspire you. Steve shares four original songs and gives us the lowdown on working with session musician Blair Masters, being featured in the documentary "Send My Mail to Nashville," and collaborating with his wife - novelist Morgan Wylie. We also check out three craft beer recommendations from MicroBrewClub.com and a new Top 6 list - the Top 6 worst cover songs.

Chas E, Mike Mitchell and Adia K are back for more music and beer adventures. This week we check out a fine American Amber Ale from Stoudts Brewing - Revel Red. And this cold ale is the perfect fuel for discussing our hot Top 6 list - John Mayer’s Top 6 Hottest Flames. It's our first Top 6 list determined by our listeners themselves! We also have News with Adia K and for the music lovers, we have tunes from Mike and Chas as well as previous guest Luke Amelang and Nashville singer/songwriter Jeff Blaney.

Singer/songwriter Jonathan Tea makes a stop on At The Hops during his recent Nashville visit. Jonathan is a regular fixture in the New York/New Jersey songwriter circuit and was interviewed remotely on a previous At The Hops podcast. Today we have him live in our studio with Chas E, Mike Mitchell and special guest Sophia - Jonathan's fantastic canine traveling friend. Jonathan tells us about his latest EP "Ghost" and gives us three fantastic live performances with a bit of added percussion from Sophia. We also check out three beers made right here in Tennessee, including Thunder Ann from Jackalope Brewing Company, Country Roots from Tennessee Brew Works, and Wicket Gate from Black Abbey Brewing. On top of all that, we have a round of Top 6 featuring the greatest drinking songs!

It's a St Patrick's Day themed episodes with Chas E, Mike Mitchell and Adia K! We've got a generous helping of dark ale to review as we check out Turtle Anarchy's Portly Stout, some great original music from our own Mike Mitchell, and a special encore of Steve Charles' Irish inspired tune - "Cuttin' Keri." Add in a round of Top 6 featuring Irish bands, a bit of Irish Random Song, and the News from Adia K, and its a full, festive, St. Patrick's Day episode on the house.

Singer/songwriter Opal Justice joins Chas and Mike for more rounds of music and craft beer tasting. Opal gives us some awesome performances of her brand of outlaw country with songs "Outlaw" and "My Country," Opal also plays us the track "My Name Is Mrs" from her latest cd - "Flaws and Raw." We also have a special duet featuring Opal with our own Mike Mitchell, a round of Top 6 highlighting the greatest duets of all time, and three craft beers supplied by MicroBeerClub.com. Singer/songwriter Alyssa Jacey is back with Chas and Mike, and this time she's brought a surprise guest to make the show extra intoxicating! Sure, we have a few craft beers to help us with that too including a beer brewed with fresh, chili peppers - mui caliente! And what could be hotter than that, how about brand new tunes from the one and only Alyssa Jacey, including "The Light," "Drowning Me," and "Don't Fight The Love." It's all here for your drinking and listening pleasure.

Chas E, Mike Mitchell and Adia K meet three high gravity, specialty beers from Brooklyn Brewery that bring them to new highs and lows in podcasting. In fact, this episode may match wits with the classic Mangria episode. It may even be better! We have our three beer ratings, News from Adia K, a Top 6 list of the highest paid women in music, and a special preview of Nashville singer/songwriter Ty Brando's latest album "Don't Go To That Well." Singer/songwriters Paulette and Duane are Duette, and they join Chas E and Mike Mitchell for another music and beer filled episode of At The Hops. Duette has a rich musical history with performances from Nashville's famous Brown's Diner to New York's legendary Bitter End. Duette perform three of their original songs including "Jason & Ida" which was cut by Kate Taylor and her brother James Taylor. Paulette and Duane also help Chas and Mike check out some craft brews from Straight To Ale and a Beatle focused Top 6 list.

Singer/songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Trevor Finlay joins At The Hops for some tunes and trippel ale tasting. Trevor gives us the scoop on his latest cd "Sandpaper and Bourbon" and how it feels to be one of the stars of the documentary film "Send My Mail To Nashville." Hey, he was not only in the film - he wrote the theme song, and he plays it for us live in the studio along with two other burning performances of "I Need A New Heart" and "Leave A Mark." Trevor also lends his hand in tasting a few trippel style ales with Chas E. and Mike Mitchell. They get the low down on what a trippel is from everyone's favorite beer guru, Jack, and rate three craft trippels from the US and Canada. Hey, it's international!

Singer/songwriter Roger Jaeger joins At The Hops fresh off the release of his latest cd Beacon. Roger talks with Chas E and Mike Mitchell about his amazing journeys from Oklahoma to Nashville to India, which inspire his eclectic, modern sound. Check out Roger's fantastic music on two live performances and the title track from his latest cd Beacon. Roger lends his beer tasting expertise to the show as well, as we try three beer recommendations from microbeerclub.com, and get a lesson in "mouth feel" from everyone's favorite beer guru - Jack. Singer/songwriter Grace Pettis joins Chas E. and Mike Mitchell to talk about her highly acclaimed album Two Birds, working with producer Billy Crockett and her talented, songwriting family. Grace gives us three live performances including Moving On from Two Birds and TVA written by brother Rayvon Pettis. Grace, Chas & Mike also take a blindfold test of three beers from New Belgium Brewing and see if they can determine if they are ales or lagers. Know the difference yourself? Singer/songwriter and filmmaker Stacey K. Black returns to At The Hops with singer/songwriter and vocalist extraordinaire Jennifer Friend. Stacey has recently the documentary film "Send My Mail To Nashville" which explores the world of Nashville singer/songwriters and features Jennifer Friend. The two join Chas E and Mike MItchell to talk about the film experience, today's Nashville music scene, and perform a few original compositions. And they test their sommelier skills in the world of craft beers as each try to detect the special culinary ingredient of three craft beers.

Singer/songwriter Luke Amelang brings his fingerpickin', Americana style to At The Hops; and joins Chas E and Mike Mitchell for an exploration of porters versus stouts. Check out Luke's inspirational performances of "I Got It Made," "Scars," and "Pathways and Signal Fires" and learn a bit about the differences between porter and stout ales.

Chas E. checks out the premiere of Stacey K. Black's singer/songwriter documentary "Send My Mail To Nashville" with interviews from filmmaker Stacey K. Black and stars Steven Wylie, Kevin So, Adam James, Jack Frisby, Trevor Finlay, and Lydia Smith. Also, Chas checks out the Adam Bomb IPA from Nashville's own Blackstone Brewery.

Chas E, Mike Mitchell and Adia K ring in some Christmas cheer with 3 craft brews and holiday music from singer/songwriter Danika Holmes. Chas gives us the Top 6 most downloaded holiday songs, Adia brings us holiday news and Mike chips in with a Random Song about hungry reindeer. Songs Lucky For Me and The Christmas Song are featured from Danika Holme's "Acoustic Christmas Sessions" and Chas E performs some holiday standards as well. Our three winter craft beers featured are Red Betty IPA from Central City Brewing, Winter Solstice from Anderson Valley Brewing and Winter Bock Lager from Silver City Brewery.

Singer/songwriter Kristen Cothron brings her sultry sounds to the At The Hops stage, promoting her latest album "Show Me Where The Edge Is." Krsten plays two live numbers including "Fall" and "Dangerous" and shares with us the full track of "The Dark Side" produced by Ben Strano. Band mate Justin Conn joins the show as well for some music talk and craft beer tasting along with your hosts, Chas E. and Mike. This episode's beers include the Bellevue Brewing IPA, the Pray For Snow Winter Ale from 10 Barrell Brewing Company, and Big Al's Smoked Porter from Big Al Brewing.
