Explore Norths Podcast

Simon Currin and his wife Sally started their circumnavigation in 2015. They started in the high latitudes by cruising in the summer season and leaving their boat, Shimshal, a 47-foot deckhouse built by CR Yachts in Orust, Sweden, in various locations around the world while they went back to the UK to work. Ten years later, the couple has reached New Zealand and is full-time cruisers.  You can read more about their adventures on Voyages of Shimshal. Simon is a former commodore of the Ocean Cruising Club (OCC), and Sally is a former Treasurer of the same club. Etter ni måneders soloseilas kom Erling Haugnes hjem i slutten av september med SY Gina. Nå er han tilbak på jobb. Vi tok en prat med ham om turen som har vært og drømmen som ble realisert. Ella Hibbert (28), aka Ella in the Arctic, took on the North West Passage solo and came out in the other end exhausted, but happy. She is the first British female to sail the mytich passage solo, and only 14 have done it before her. Now she is putting Yeva on the hard, and then she will continue through the North East Passage next summer. We talked to her while she was storm-bound in St. Paul in the Bering Sea. Ella's Arctic expedition is officially endorsed by the Scientific Exploration Society and she is also part of The International SeaKeepers Society. You can, and you should follow her and support her. SY Novara, a Bestevear 60C with two carbon fibre aero rigs, have finished the North West Passage with their current custodians Veronica Lysaght and Nigel Jollands. It is the second time Novara sails through the icy and mythical passage at the top of the world.  The couple is on a climate mission as they sail from the UK to New Zealand—the Novara - One Planet Project. We can all make a difference for the ocean. Some bigger than others, but we should all do our part. Martin Hassellöv and Bjorn Bertoft, on board Hrimfare and the Sailing4Science project, aim to do good while sailing with scientists. The Hrimfare is transformed from a round-the-world sailing boat into a sailing laboratory for scientists, while also promoting citizen scientists. Om litt over et år starter Golden Globe Race 2026. Svensk/norske Daniel Alfredsson skal seile denne solo non-stop jorden rundt seilasen i sin OE 32. Hoisting sails and claiming you run a sustainable expedition sailing company don't resonate well anymore. You are off course, way more sustainable than big cruise ships, but who isn't? You have to factor in diesel consumption, travel, food, waste, and many other factors to get a correct picture of your carbon footprint. But also the building of an expedition boat has to be counted, and that's where Andrew Cowen and his co-founders of Expedition Zero and Wavysail are going to make a difference. Their ambition is to build expedition boats for the commercial market with a much lower carbon footprint and upcycle old boats to the same market. We talked to Andrew Cowen about the business side of their start-ups - and of course, the environmental side of it all. Their ambitions and business model give a sailor hope. Anita og Paul-Gunnar Nakken har tatt med seg barna Tuva (8) og Storm (11) på langtur i SY Explore, en Ovni 435 som forvøvrig er min gamle båt. Planen er å seile melkruta rundt Atlanteren i et år. Men det er også muligheter for at de ser lenger ut i horisonten og legger inn et par år ekstra i Stillehavet. Hvem vet? De to voksne har vært på langtur før, og har mye lavere skuldre denne gangen. Jeanette and Fredrik Liljekvist have been sailing full-time for the last ten years. The last four aboard their Boreal 55OC in the cold waters in the North. Along the way they have been entertaining, inspiring, and sharing knowledge through their YouTube channel Bushpoint Sailing. Now the time has come to seek other adventures, and they are putting their high-latitude expedition-ready boat on the market. Novara is one of the most beautiful high latitude expedition boats ever built. She is a Bestevear 60C with two carbon fibre aero rigs. She was designed to take adventurers to the most remote places on the ocean. A few years ago Veronica Lysaght and Nigel Jollands took over as custodians of the ship. They wanted to sail from the UK home to New Zealand with a climate mission. Martin Augestad Larsen er en som gjør alvor av sine drømmer. Nå har han blitt den første nordmannen som har seilt jorden rundt non stop. The 28-year-old sailor is heading for the Northwest Passage first, and then through the Northeast Passage.  We talked to her a few days before she was starting. Nick Weis-Fogh og Torill Estella Pfaff er et seilerpar litt utenom det vanlige. De bor og jobber om bord i SY Skydancer på heltid, og det siste året har de seil rundt Nord-Amerika i sin 73 fots stål og aluminium skonnert. Det er en 15.000 nautisk mil lang rundreise som inkluderer den legendariske Nordvestpassasjen. Når du som ung grunder kan gjøre om marint avfall til et nyttig produkt og drive hele butikken fra en seilbåt er det håp - for flere av oss. Floris van Hees (1978) and Ivar Smits (1974) were deeply concerned about climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, pollution, and social inequality. It had become increasingly clear to them that humanity was facing an existential ecological and social crisis that demanded a drastic change of course. But what could that new course be? To find out, they quit their jobs and left Amsterdam in 2016 to sail around the world on their renovated sailboat Lucipara 2. As Sailors for Sustainability, they made it their mission to find solutions that could accelerate the transition to an ecologically sustainable and socially just society. Eight years later they had circumnavigated the world and returned home. Veronica Skotnes første bok Det jeg leste i bølgene - Fortellinger fra havfolket er en fantastisk liten bok som gir innsikt, undring og ikke minst et ønske om å seile til kysten av Finnmark for å oppleve mer. Vinterseilasen blir bare mer og mer populær. I år var det 43 påmeldte båter til starten fra Bolærne på den siste dagen i februar. De fikk en veldig lett bris og en sol som varmet på ferden mot Strømstad. Petter Mowinckel er en veldig erfaren seiler som har vært innom det meste fra jolle til havseilere siden han først kastet loss i 1969. I tillegg har han konstruert båter, bygget båter og bygget på  båter - noe han gjør nå på sin katamaran. Vinterprosjektet til den driftige seileren er å forlenge båten med en fot.
