Sinopse
In the short story "D. Paula", Machado de Assis presents a cunning and observant widow who notices the romantic involvement between her niece Venancinha and the young Vasco. While advising the girl with apparent moral severity, D. Paula gradually reveals that she also has memories of a forbidden love in her own youth. Between confidences and silences, the short story exposes the irony of social conventions and the persistence of human passions.
