The whole Law and the priesthood that administered it was necessary because sin separated us from God.  This passage introduces the concept of a high priest who identifies with people and, via sacrifice, serves to bridge the gap created by sin. What human priests did in part, Jesus does infinitely better.  He is a sympathetic high priest who is approachable and ready for us to come to him in order to receive mercy and grace.
