Likely his final work, The Return of the Prodigal Son was painted by the great Rembrandt within two years of his death in 1669. It’s a somber, quiet version of the celebratory moment depicted in scripture. The elder brother and other onlookers watch the touching moment from a distance. In this tender moment, Rembrandt draws all of the attention to the father.Dutch Theologian, Henri Nouwen, stated that instead of being called The Return of the Prodigal Son, this painting could easily be called, “The Welcome by the Compassionate Father.” In the great parable, much is made of the prodigal’s squander of wealth, his repentance and return.
