In this episode, hosts Katherine Cody, Psy.D. and Becca Lory, CAS, BCCS welcome back guest Dr. Valerie gaus. Dr. Gaus is a psychologist, licensed by New York State, who has been a practicing psychotherapist for more than 20 years. She specializes in individual psychotherapy for adults of all ages, from 18-98, with extensive experience serving people with disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma and stress-related problems. She approaches therapy using a cognitive-behavioral framework. She is also an author, and the new second edition of her book “Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder” comes out November 20th, published by Guilford Press. The three discuss the challenges surrounding the removal of the term “Asperger’s” from the DSM-V, the challenges changes in terminology can present researchers, and why mental health treatment modalities shouldn’t always be centered around someone’s autism diagnosis.
