Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. Do you know who this fellow is? He’s pianist, bandleader and band broker Jean Goldkette and you’ll hear from and about him in the third segment of this week’s show. I say in the intro to the segment that he was born March 18th, 1893 in Patras, Greece. but the date and place of his birth remain a matter of conjecture. May 18 of that year is the date Goldkette provided to the US government. He also claimed 1894, 1897, and 1899 as years of birth. Not only his date and place of birth are disputed, but he may or may not have been the same person as Constantin Goldkette, born in Avignon, France in 1895. He gave his own birthplace as Valenciennes, France. His mother, Angelina Goldkette, was of Danish birth.
