Finding happiness within so that you may be happy on the outside is worth every moment spent on the task. I know exactly what it feels like to "put on a happy face" at the grocery store or anywhere in public for that matter only to return home or to my car in tears because that's not what I was feeling on the inside.  I remember just wanting to get to a place where no one could dictate whether I was happy or not.
