Eleanora Rosewood, the dowager Lady Rosewood, is on the trail of her late husband's secret cabal, which plans to destroy the city of Shanghai with a machine of his design. Her only companion is her valet, a Russian sailor named Sacha Valentin. Fearful for her safety, Eleanora has turned over the results of her investigations to Dorian Bloom, a sceptical old friend at the consulate.
