Ohio High School Hoops: Around The State

We kick Season 2 off in style as we welcome Prep Scouting's Chas Wolfe onto the OHSH: Around the State Podcast. Chas is a wealth of knowledge and has done pretty much everything in the basketball industry. Today, we talk Atlanta (EYBL), coaching changes in Ohio, Competitive Balance, and restaurants along with plenty of random and humorous comments. 

On this morning's episode, I discuss the eight semifinal games along with some potential state final matchups. This is an episode specifically made for your drive to Columbus this morning. I also briefly give you my NCAA Tourney picks, which you should probably do exactly the opposite. Happy State Tournament Weekend, everyone!

This is an absolute can't miss episode, and quite possibly our favorite show to date. Coach Babe Kwasiak and his Father (Tedd Kwasniak) give us a detailed history lesson of Viking Village. We deep-dive into the 1994 season, which ends with the Vikings third state championship and also spend some time in the late 1970's and 1980's. Coach Kwasniak has an uncanny ability to make you believe you are back at St. John Arena in March of 1994. We talk about the humbling loss to Bob Krizancic's Girard Indians in 1993 and how that loss fueled the VASJ into the 1993-1994 season. Coach Kwas even makes reference to Coach Krizancic's beautiful mullet. If you appreciate the history of Ohio basketball, don't miss this episode! 

In our third installment of our four-part series remember the 1994 State Champions, we feature Youngstown Ursuline and former head coach Mitch Cerny.  Coach Cerny is one of the great story tellers in the business, and his detailed account of that season is quite impressive. Coach Cerny talks us through the improbable tournament run after a (10-10) regular season. After listening to this episode, you may see Ursuline's run a bit differently. Coach Cerny notes some key facts from the regular season that make it seem a little less of an upset, but an unbelievable feat nonetheless. 

In the second episode, of our four-part 25th Anniversary series, we reminisce with current Westerville Central head coach and Westerville North graduate Kevin Martin. We remember the incredible run by the Warriors, which eventually ended in a 50-48 overtime triumph of Cincinnati Withrow in the Division I State Championship contest. Coach Martin and I discuss a laundry list of things from that 1993-1994 season. We touch on the two losses to Mount Vernon and Upper Arlington in the regular season, a district final escape of Pickerington, regional battles with Zanesville and Columbus Eastmoor, and state games against Cleveland Heights and Withrow. We talk about what it was like playing for Coach Hoover and if he still  followed his career after he left North for Canton McKinley.
