Low Vision Hijinx: Not Much Eyesight - Plenty Of Vision!

As a low vision person, I often find it challenging to do something most people take for granted...plugging something into an outlet. Anybody else? Here are a couple of funny stories about one of life's little challenges.

As a kid, I was told that I had a damaged optic nerve. That's all the doctors knew. I didn't find out until I had an eye exam for getting a guide dog, at age 50, that I have Optic Nerve HHypoplasis, ONH. Getting this diagnosis didn't phase me until I just now learned about some of the other things that can go with it.

This episode is about my call to United Airlines Disability Services when the agent, "Susie," (woman with a foreign accent) told me I couldn't get help to my gate and between planes because they only offered blind people "directional assistance." Here's how you can handle it when you get BOGUS information from a customer srevice agent!

I'm talking about 2 kitchen helpers in this episode. One is a regular off-the-shelf item, and the other is adapted. I have a couple pans that come with a portion guide, and I love them. They can be bought at a kitchen store or probably Amazon. I love these because they make cutting a portion nice and even. A knife with a slicing guide is great for those of us with low vision because it becomes easier to do things like cut bread or meat.
