In 1983, I was a junior in high school and worked after school for an independent record store on the north side of town.  It was the year the music world gave birth to Madonna.  The cable company just added MTV to our channel lineup the year before, so it was the first chance I had to view this person who dared to call herself "Madonna."  It was also the Reagan era, a time when my father saw his shoe business take off and dear ole mom and dad were jetting around the world discovering new places.
